In 1947, the Grand Opening of the Art Deco styled Village Theater on the island of Coronado, just a ferry ride from downtown San Diego, is a by-invitation-only affair. A jubilant audience, hopeful that war will never again appear on the American horizon, is treated to the Best Picture of the Year Gentleman’s Agreement. However, the decades to follow are anything but peaceful. The headlines scream of assassinations, racial hatred and jungle warfare. Into this vortex, four young lovers try to navigate to safety. Jack Adams and Greg Larson discover that the scars of Vietnam are far more permanent than any medals pinned to their uniforms, and their wives Abby DiFranco and Raquel Mendez bear the brunt of the sorrow these men carry home. But at least they have Hollywood, and the Village Theater becomes an escape from these turbulent decades. Couched in red plush seats, they witness the evolution of America’s bright innocence transform to dark cynicism and heartbreaking tragedy. Fifty years later, the Village Theater, dilapidated and eventually shuttered, becomes an eyesore on Orange Avenue. The Restoration of that theater parallels the lives of those lovers and the belief that by returning the Village Theater to its original grandeur, they are actually restoring themselves—heart and soul. In The Restoration, it becomes clear that “you have to break down walls to reconfigure, remodel, and renovate…you have to leave the best memories and create new ones.” The Restoration of Village Theater, its closure, and eventual renovation is based in fact. However, its fictional characters discover that 'the movies' can enlighten, inspire, and heal one's broken heart.

I've read all of Robert Pacilio's books, and so far this is my favorite. The story is intriguing. The characters are real - with their lovable traits and their obvious flaws. But it just reminds me how we're all human and we all deserve to love and be loved. Though the story is about the restoration of a theatre, of course that's really a metaphor. And while I loved learning about the theater, I loved figuring out the webbed connections between the characters even more.

In the interest of full disclosure, Robert Pacilio was one of my very favorite high school teachers, and he was one of my favorite teaching colleagues. But that isn't biasing my opinion - because being a good teacher, even a good English teacher, doesn't make you a good writer. And if I thought the book was terrible, I'd just keep my mouth shut. Luckily, I don't have to keep my mouth shut. It's good, and it's definitely worth the read.

The Restoration Robert Pacilio 9781494255589 Books Reviews

The Restoration is a love story that handles heartbreak with sensitive grace and realism. Robert Pacilio is a profound storyteller seamlessly interweaving messages of love, and life after love, with milestones in American history. Bravo on a great read!
The Restoration is a wonderful book to read. The history of the Village Theater on the peninsula of Coronado combined with a love story on many levels was delightful. My book club thoroughly loved reading this novel and discussing it. Robert Pacilio is an entertaining author. If you like this book, I would highly recommend his other novels Meetings at the Metaphor Cafe and Midnight at the Metaphor Cafe.
Robert Pacilio's aptly named third book, THE RESTORATION, does as it says. Set in the romance of the Art Deco styled Village Theater on historical Coronado Island, its characters emerge from the devastation of loss and the hopelessness left by the Vietnam War to new beginnings, unexpectedly. The warmth of the Southern California sun and the strength of the human spirit make it a nourishing and satisfying read.
A beautiful story, beautifully written, that touched my heart!
It’s difficult to note hear the lyrics to Don McLean’s “American Pie” in your mind while reading Robert Pacilio’s The Restoration. Through references to the popular music and movies of each era it encompasses, Pacilio weaves a romantic tail on many levels. Whether it’s the projectionist and his beloved movie theater or the main characters colliding into new love, The Restoration is a rich story that’s very quick and easy to read while difficult to put down. If you’re a fan of recent American history, popular culture, and/or love itself chances are you’re going to enjoy this novel. Go for it!
I have never felt the need to write a book review before, but must give a big thumbs up for "The Restoration" by Robert Pacilio. It is a beautiful story of love, lives and events that are artfully interwoven. It was fun to read about the theatre that I have walked by numerous times, but never knew the story of its reconstruction. The author had my attention from page one to the end! A delightful read!
I was lucky enough to have the author as a teacher throughout high school; however, regardless of my bias, this was a great read! It is inspiring that someone who was/is such an amazing teacher is also able to WRITE!!

I feel there is a pressure, since he was my English teacher, to really review the book and dig deep. -) I should probably discuss how the many themes are all entwined from the locations in San Diego, to the movies, to the Vietnam War, to the music, and of course, all the likeable characters. Regardless of all of the many literary elements, the story is just fun, insightful, and will make you laugh and cry. And regardless of the metaphors or foreshadowing, isn't that what we all want in a good book?

Congrats on another winning novel, and I agree...WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!
