Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Child New Story Book; Or Tales and Dialogues for Little Folks Anonymous 9781318712045 Books

I think this may have been a compilation of fifth grade writing practices in which the student were learning how to write dialogue. I remember doing those when I was that age.

There are six:

The Little Ship - two unknowns talk about a cork boat in a water basin, that famous Captain Cook is in search of the Friendly Islands and they share a fact about each.

The Little Girl and the Shell - A little girl is spotted listening to the whisper of her shell. Her family calls that whisper "Henry's promise."

Robert and John - Two brothers are on the way to school. John wants to play hookie, Robert refuses. Not five minutes after John watches Robert enter school, he runs after and confesses to his teacher.

The Frosty Morning - A brother wants his sister to go outside with him, but she doesn't want to go since it's so cold. He puts her in her coat anyway and of course, once she's outside, it's pleasant after all.

Susan's White Rabbit - Susan is telling her friend, Mary, all about her precious new rabbit.

The Pet Robin - Frederick has a pet robin. First we're told how much Fred and the bird love each other, then get a glimpse of past when the bird was so sick they thought it would die. This is by far the best little passage, with which ending is pointed out how we can and do take things forgranted.

There's the sense that there is something here to teach, and if I was in teacher mode and not on summer vacation, I just might be able to pull those lessons out. I'll probably use these as writing samples for my eight year old that struggles more with words, but I won't waste my ten year old's time with it.
